When James reached out about photographing a surprise proposal in Tuscaloosa, I was so excited. Surprise proposals are truly my favorite type of session to photograph - getting to help plan such a special moment is an honor and a privilege (and also a thrill). James and Gina were moving to Alabama and wanted to explore Tuscaloosa before officially making it home. What better way to start their new chapter than with a proposal in their new city? James wanted to pop the question somewhere outdoors and natural, so after discussing several Tuscaloosa locations, we settled on Van de Graaff Park.


Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal in Tuscaloosa

James was an absolute breeze to work with in the planning process. We had a couple of planning calls leading up to the big day to nail down all the details - timing, location within the park, and how to keep it a complete surprise. The plan was for me to pose as a nature photographer when they arrived at the park, then capture the proposal candidly before revealing myself and taking couples portraits afterward.


The Proposal at Van de Graaff Park

I arrived at Van de Graaff Park early and set up my "nature photography" cover. It was very overcast but the park is so scenic, we didn't need the sun anyways. James had shared their location with me, so I knew exactly when they were entering the park. Gina got a little suspicious when James veered off their schedule to head to a park, but she was still genuinely surprised when he got down on one knee. The moment was absolutely perfect - emotional, genuine, and so them. After she said yes (of course!), I dropped the façade and we proceeded with couples portraits around Van de Graaff Park.

James and Gina were so chill and natural in front of the camera. We captured some stunning images of them celebrating their engagement.Getting to be part of this moment - their first steps toward making Alabama home and starting their life together - was such a treat. Congratulations James and Gina!
