A 15-min "Fresh-48" // Birmingham, AL // Welcome to the World Wesley!

The night before our family's little trip to Atlanta for Easter weekend, I received a text that my newest nephew, Wesley, had been born. Since I would be driving right by the hospital in Birmingham I figured I had to stop and take some quick fresh-48 images for them.

When I was in the hospital after delivering Lily, a 3rd party photography company came in and took some images of her. I love the images too. The process was fairly simple, I didn't even have to move and she spent about 10 minutes taking them. The images were very expensive and not super high quality, but I still loved them. I knew I could improve upon this for my sister in law and wanted to try.

I got their permission to visit and headed their way. I only had about 45 minutes to spend with them and I had to feed my own baby in that time. I knew there would not be much time for photos. I fed sweet miss Lily while I heard Wesley's story of how he made his entrance to the world the night before. That's not my story to tell, but let me just say as a 3rd child, he had a quick arrival.

Once we had caught up, I handed Lily over to my brother and started taking photos. We discussed what outfit to put him in but since I only had about 10-15 minutes left in my visit, we left him in what his was wearing - a onesie that said baby brother, and grey sweat pants.

I started taking photos of him and completely forgot to turn off the overhead lighting. About 5 minutes later I was shooting directly over him and could see the yellow lighting and said out loud 'I FORGOT TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS!!'. Something to remember for a future session. I am definitely prone to make mistakes and were this a full hour session, I probably would have not used the first images. However, they are simply too cute to exclude them so I figured it was better to show them and admit the fault than withhold them. I mean...that yawn??? way too cute.

I turned the lighting off and we rolled Wesley over to the big windows, which offered fantastic natural light. I also used my flash some as well, but Lily didn't like the flash going off. I included a picture of Lily and my brother at the end of these photos. She was very curious about the baby but I didn't get her too close.

I used the remaining 5 minutes to get some pictures of my brother and sister in law interacting with Wesley. I love images that show just how tiny new life is and one of the best ways to do that is to show them in comparison to your hand size. They will only be this tiny for a short window and I really wanted to show that the best way I can through these images.

I really enjoyed this sweet time with my family and this quick fresh-48 session we had. A fresh 48 means a photo session within 48 hours of the child being born, typically taken in a hospital, but also can be taken in your home if you had a home birth or an uncomplicated birth and were sent home the next day. The photos are intended to capture the details of your tiny new arrival. If you might be interested in booking a fresh-48 session with me in Tuscaloosa or Northport, you can contact me here.
