Darien & Kaitlin // Birmingham Botanical Gardens // Surprise Proposal Photography Session


Darien reached out just a few days before he planned to propose to Kaitlin at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. He already had the perfect Birmingham proposal day planned: Kaitlin was coming into town for the weekend, they would spend the morning near the lake, enjoy dinner in Mountain Brook, and stop for what she thought was a casual walk through the Birmingham Botanical Gardens beforehand. The only thing missing was a photographer to document the surprise proposal.


Darien’s email to me was short and understandably urgent, so with the proposal only a few days away, I gave him a call. We talked through his plan, the proposal location, where I would hide, and how we would make sure Kaitlin never suspected a thing. He booked his Birmingham surprise proposal session that same day. Normally, I spend quite a bit of time helping couples plan proposal photography, but Darien already had nearly everything figured out, so all that was left was for me to arrive early at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and get into position.


One of the biggest challenges with surprise proposal photography is timing. Darien let me know they were running behind, which is actually something I intentionally plan for. It is pretty hard to tell your girlfriend that she absolutely has to be dressed, ready, and standing in one exact spot at 4:30 without making her suspicious! I build extra time into my proposal sessions for exactly that reason. Darien shared his location with me, so I was able to wait nearby until they were getting close. Once they arrived at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, I moved into my hiding spot and quietly tracked them as they walked toward the proposal location.


Everything went perfectly. Darien proposed, Kaitlin said yes, and I photographed the entire moment from a distance without giving away the surprise. Afterward, Darien pointed out where I had been hiding, and we transitioned right into engagement portraits throughout the gardens.


The Birmingham Botanical Gardens are such a beautiful location for a surprise proposal because you can go from photographing the proposal itself straight into a full engagement session without ever leaving the property. The greenery, pathways, gardens, and quiet corners give us plenty of variety for natural and romantic engagement photos.
